I think this plane is going to crash!”Should Statements: “I shouldn’t be so anxious and insecure. Other people don’t feel this way.”Emotional Reasoning: “I feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up!”Self-Blame: “What’s wrong with me? I’m such a loser!”Mental Filter: “Why can’t I get anything done? My life seems like one long procrastination.”Now imagine what it would feel like to live a life that’s free of worries and self-doubt; to go to sleep at night feeling peaceful and relaxed; to overcome your shyness and have fun with other people; to give dynamic presentations without worrying yourself sick ahead of time; to enjoy greater creativity, productivity and self-confidence. Book When Panic Attacks: The New, Drug-Free Anxiety Therapy That Can Change Your Life Review :

My biggest complaint about this book is that the author criticizes the use of antidepressants. For some people, these drugs are a literal life savor. His reason: he doesn't believe that depression or anxiety is caused by a chemical imbalance.I beg to differ. My depression is primarily SAD, seasonal affective disorder, and it is related to the amount of light. I live in Seattle and our winters are dark. I use a light box, take Vitamin D, and exercise, but that isn't quite enough to keep me out of a depression. So, in addition, I take a very low dose of an antidepressant and as a result, I don't sit on the couch all winter. But when the sun comes back out, I no longer need any of these supports -- the light box or the meds.If David Burns was correct in this theories, I would experience the same depression levels all year since my thoughts don't change with the seasons.Back to the book: if you have never done therapy or taken a look at the way you talk to yourself, you will probably find some helpful tips in this book. But PLEASE don't see these strategies as a direct replacement for medication. Use them in conjunction with your medication, not instead of.
I have read many self-help books, gone to therapy, and spent countless hours wondering what was so wrong with me.None of my doctors had proposed CBT to me (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). It was in their arsenal - when I asked my current therapist about it she said "oh yeah, I have a few worksheets on that." I don't know why this isn't the go-to method of therapeutic healing! Maybe because the talk-it-out therapeutic healing takes years upon years to have any measure of success? Maybe because people with sick brains make those in the medical field more money? I have no doubts that my therapist wants to see me "better" but just talking about things has never felt good enough for me. I want to work. I want to do something to make myself feel better. So I took my therapist's worksheets and I started filling them out. I also completely filled out and underlined every page of this book. For the first time in almost 40 years of living, I am allowed to be in control of what I am feeling because Dr David Burns gave me the tools to understand and to re-wire my own brain.Yes I still have severe anxiety. Yes more of my days are spent in depression than out of it.But you know what? I have spent a few days OUT of depression recently. And when I got sucked back in I was able to claw myself out quicker using the methods in this book.I help myself thanks to this book.
